Jerry Seinfeld is one of the most successful comedians of all time and what is most impressive about him is his ability to maintain his level of success for such a long period of time. At his peak in 1998 Seinfeld earned $267 million dollars, not too shabby. What I find even more impressive is how he has maintained his level of success. In 2008, 10 years after his peak, he was still earning $85 million per year.
The “Seinfeld Strategy”
A young comedian, Brad Isaac, descries the advice he received from Seinfeld backstage. Isaac asked Seinfeld, “Any tips for a young comic.”
Here is what Isaac said Seinfeld told him…
” He told me the way to be a better comic was to create better jokes and the way to create better jokes was to write every day.
” He told me to get a big wall calendar that has a whole year on one page and hang it on a prominent wall. The next step was to get a big red magic marker. He said for each day that I do my task of writing, I get to put a big red X over that day.
” After a few days, you’ll have a chain. Just keep at it and the chain will grow longer every day. You’ll like seeing that chain, especially when you get a few weeks under your belt. Your only job is to not break the chain.”
I absolutely love this story and I think we can all take something applicable from it. I can remember when I was starting my practice one of my coaches always preached to me that you build a practice by base hits, by consistently hitting base hits, not occasional home runs. I think the same thing applies to success in-regards to being healthy.
How many people do you know that set big “New Years Resolutions” that fail within a few weeks if not days and they just give up? How many people have you seen (maybe even yourself) go on some insanely crazy diet or new workout routine that had a short life span?
I say try the “Seinfeld Strategy”! Get yourself a big calendar choose a healthy activity/healthy choice, etc. that you are going to add into your daily routine. The key is it has to be something that you can do that actually has a direct result or product. For example, you can just read about eating healthy, you actually have to eat something healthy. You can just read a fitness book or magazine, you need to actually do some type of exercise, even if it’s just walking around the block.
Here are a few suggestions.
1. Do some type of exercise every day, I don’t care how much or little just something.
2. Eat some vegetables every day.
3. Take some high-quality fish oil daily.
I don’t really care what it is just pick something that if you consistently do it, it will lead to a healthier you.
Please write and let me know what you are going to do.
